Mercia TREC Club was founded in 2001 but got off to a slow start due to Foot and Mouth. However early activities included un-mounted orienteering training and judges training. This proved a valuable introduction to TREC for new members. In 2003 the club had 42 members. At the 2002 General Meeting club members agreed to an increased fee to cover the cost for the TREC Club to apply for affiliation to British Riding Clubs. The club was accepted on a provisional basis (as all clubs are initially). Mercia TREC Club aims to offer training for both horse and rider in the art
of trail riding. This involves unity and trust of both horse and rider, so will
ultimately involve schooling in flatwork, obedience and jumping as well as map
reading, compass skills and general care of horse and rider in order to prepare
both to have the confidence to compete in TREC competitions or organise their
own trail ride. Competitions are held all over the country, about 65 in the season, which
runs from April to October. Generally they are over a weekend in areas that are
truly wonderful to ride in and over countryside not always available to the
public. The social side of TREC is very important and we try to keep a friendly
atmosphere in the club, with members offering lifts to competitions or pairing
up in order to compete.
